Merčnik farmstead: Slovenian family runs a 24/7 home-made bread and potica shop that works on trust

In a little place called Benedikt, which lies in the hills of north-eastern Slovenia, you can take a beautiful walk along the vineyard paths. Along the way, you can also make a stop at a very cosy and tasty place – a little cottage selling the most delicious home-made and farm-grown products.

They believe in honest people

The Merčnik family farm has a registered supplementary activity of baking bread, poticas and pastries. They also prepare home-made noodles, various pickles, home-grown potatoes, dried fruit and much more.

You can also get fresh eggs and all sorts of home-made whole-wheat flour bread!

Since there are many walkers coming to the area to enjoy the views and fresh-air, they decided to offer them some of their products. But the shop has no vendors. After choosing the products, the customers leave the amount written next to the product in the cash register next to it.

Everything fresh and safe

The cottage is open 24 hours every day of the year and the Merčnik family members take care there are always fresh products inside.

Of course, they take care of all the covid-19 measures, so the purchase is safe. Regarding the income, the family says that at the end of the day, there is usually a euro or more left there …
