Slovenia declares 2022 as the year of the Piran born violinist Giuseppe Tartini

2022 will be the year of Piran-born composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770), as 330 years will have passed since his birth next year.

In Piran Tartini’s birth house is still standing

An Italian composer and violinist from the time of the Venetian Republic, was born and raised in Piran. His merchant father moved to today’s Slovenian coast from Florence, while his mother was a descendant of one of the oldest aristocratic Piranese families.

His parents intended Tartini to become a Franciscan friar and, in this way, he received basic musical training. He studied violin first at the collegio delle Scuole Pie in Capodistria (today Koper). Later on went on to study law at the University of Padua.

Tartini was the first known owner of a violin made by Antonio Stradivari. He also founded a violin school, which was attended by students from all over Europe.

The Italian years

After marrying a woman who was a favourite of the powerful Italian Cardinal Giorgio Cornaro, he had to flee Padua to go to the monastery of St. Francis in Assisi, where he could escape prosecution. At the monastery he intensively studied the violin and the basics of composition.

Upon return to Padua he was named the first violinist and  ‘maestro di cappella‘ (concert-master) at the Basilica di Sant’Antonio, where he worked most of his life. He died in Padua in 1770.

Slovenian government will encourage events and programmes dedicated to the anniversary.

Piran is one of the most beautiful Slovenian coastal towns!
