Slovenia Has A New Town!

Slovenia Has A New Town!

19 January, 2021

A small Slovenian town of Zreče officially became a town! This happened at the end of 2020 after they finally reached more than three thousand inhabitants.

Zreče declared themselves town 34 years ago, but they did not have an official title.

Tourism and strong economy

Located at the foothills of the Pohorje Mountains, Zreče is lucky to be a very recognizable Slovenian tourist destination, with a strong economy (their local industrial company UNIOR is one of the largest Slovenian exporters).

Zreče is a town in northeast Slovenia and is the seat of the Municipality of Zreče. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria.

Especially in the winter months their ski resort Rogla is a very popular destination. Additionally, in the last years also a new attraction on Rogla has been built, called the Tree tops walk Pohorje/Pot med Krošnjami.

Twinned with Sedbergh in UK

In 2005, the town was twinned with Sedbergh in Cumbria, UK. The efforts of Sedbergh to find a twin town were featured in a BBC documentary, The Town That Wants A Twin and Zreče was the winning town.

Let’s Go Slovenia travel blog presented a guest piece written by David Burbidge, director of Lakeland Voice community choir from Sedbergh and Kendal in Cumbria. The choir in Sedbergh has a connection with the town of Zreče, and the singers have been exchanging visits in the past years.
