Visiting Kranj will never be the same again!
28 January, 2021
Despite the uncertain situation due to the epidemic, the city of Kranj is already planning its summer tourist season. One of the more delightful news however is opening of the bell tower of the church of St. Kancijan.
Extending the views and tourism
The Parish Church of St Kancijan in Kranj from the early 15th century is one of the most important monuments of Gothic architecture in Slovenia (it was model for Radovljica, Škofja Loka, Kamnik and Šentrupert churches). Kranj’s most important house of worship was built onto part of an older church starting in about 1400. Furthermore, the archaeological researches showed that the church stands on the foundations of a pre-Slavic sacral building from the 6th century.
Seeing the church from the inside is definitely a great treat. But as the news goes, from this summer on, visitors will be able to visit the church’s bell tower, too. Which is stunning, since Kranj is surrounded with mountains and breath-taking views.
The bell tower of The Parish Church of St Kancijan is the highest one of the three bell-towers in the city – the Pungert Tower’s and St. Mary of the Rosary Church’s.
The town of Prešeren
Kranj is the fourth-largest city in Slovenia, with a population of almost 38 000 (2020). It is located approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) northwest of the capital Ljubljana. However, Kranj has always been regarded as the capital of the Slovenian Alps, where you stand with one foot in the city and the other one in nature.
Many interesting personalities left its mark on the town during its rich history, among them also the greatest Slovenian poet, France Prešeren. The memory of this famous poet is marked around the town, there’s even a theatre with his name in the middle of Kranj.
