Full of Glam: Discover the Melania Cake
In the quaint Slovenian town of Sevnica, tucked away in the heart of the country, lies a charming pastry shop called Julija. Here, visitors can savor a unique dessert named after one of Sevnica’s most famous former residents: Melania Trump.
The “Melania Cake,” inspired by the Slovenian-born First Lady of the United States, is a refined dessert that radiates sophistication and has become a culinary symbol of the town.
A Sweet Renaissance
The creation of the Melania Cake dates back to 2017, crafted by Sevnica’s skilled pastry chefs following Donald Trump’s initial U.S. presidential victory. Since then, this elegant dessert has been a mainstay at Julija in Sevnica and its sister location in Trebnje.
Recently, with Melania Trump once again becoming the First Lady of the USA, the cake has seen a surge in popularity. “The Melania Cake has always attracted visitors,” explains Franja Krajnc, the manager of Julija. “But after this latest historic event, with Melania becoming First Lady again, we’ve noticed an increased interest and demand.”
Symbol of Elegance
The design of the Melania Cake was guided by a vision of grace and elegance, a tribute to the woman who brought international attention to Sevnica. With a creamy, subtle ivory hue meant to symbolize the White House, the cake is further adorned with delicate gold accents, enhancing its luxurious appeal.
Though the exact recipe remains a closely guarded secret, Krajnc reveals that the cake’s heart lies in its rich filling, a harmonious blend of nuts, almonds, and walnuts. Enveloped in a light, airy mousse crafted from premium Belgian white chocolate, each bite offers a creamy yet refreshing taste that perfectly complements the delicate nutty undertones.
Priced at five euros per slice, or fifty euros for a full ten-slice cake, this elegant creation remains accessible to locals and tourists alike.
A Global Attraction
Since gaining international recognition, particularly after NBC featured the Melania Cake in a report during a visit to Sevnica in 2017, this dessert has captured the attention of visitors from around the world. Many tourists, especially from the United States, now make a point of visiting Sevnica as part of their Slovenian travels just to sample this celebrated cake.
While Krajnc and her team do not expect a flood of visitors, they are confident that the allure of the Melania Cake will continue to draw curious travelers to Sevnica for years to come. Adding a personal touch to the story, Krajnc mentions that Melania’s parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were once occasional patrons of the pastry shop, lending further inspiration to the cake’s creation and making it a truly special tribute to Sevnica’s global icon.
