A Typical Slovenian Sunday: Restaurant on the Outskirts of Ljubljana Is Still Famous for Home Cooking and Generous Portions

This family-run restaurant at the foot of Šmarna Gora has remained wonderfully down-to-earth – and deserves every bit of attention it gets. More places keeping traditions like this alive, please!
At the foot of Šmarna Gora, one of Ljubljana’s most popular hiking destinations, you will find Gostilna Grad pod Šmarno goro, a traditional Slovenian restaurant well known to hikers and cyclists, as well as generations of families who come here for Sunday lunch and special occasions.
You come here for home cooking
The restaurant has a beautiful garden shaded by walnut and chestnut trees, creating an atmosphere that feels surprisingly rural considering how close it is to the Slovenian capital.
But people come here above all for the food.

The restaurant is particularly famous for its legendary fried chicken, along with beef soup, generous bowls of mixed salad and crisp, sugar-dusted flancati – traditional Slovenian fried pastries.
One enthusiastic foreign visitor summed up the experience on social media rather perfectly. Translated into English, her recommendation went something like this:
“If you find yourself in Ljubljana, head to Grad pod Šmarno goro and try some proper Slovenian home cooking: a salad of radicchio and beans with boiled potatoes and hot cracklings. Then have the sauerkraut turnip topped with more sizzling cracklings. And whatever you do, don’t leave without trying the flancati – with enough powdered sugar to end up on the tip of your nose.”
That description captures much of what makes traditional Slovenian gostilnas so appealing.
A taste of the countryside, minutes from Ljubljana
There is little need for elaborate presentation or culinary theatrics. Instead, the attraction lies in simple recipes, familiar flavours, generous portions and the unmistakable feeling that someone is feeding you properly.

It is precisely this combination that continues to win over foreign visitors – while remaining an essential part of the traditional Slovenian Sunday. There is no leaving without the fried chicken. If there is one dish that defines Grad pod Šmarno goro, it is the fried chicken.
Golden and crisp on the outside, juicy inside and served in portions unlikely to leave anyone hungry, it is the restaurant’s signature dish. During our visit, practically every table seemed to have ordered it.
The service matched the food: quick, warm and refreshingly personal. Our exceptionally friendly waitress moved between the tables carrying plates and bowls piled high with food, always with a smile. As guests left, she made a point of thanking each of them personally for coming.
It was a small gesture, but one that said a great deal about the place.

There is also a nice terrace
Surrounded by mature walnut and chestnut trees, it becomes one of the restaurant’s greatest assets in the warmer months. Guests linger over lunch in the shade while children can make the most of the slide and s wings nearby. The result is relaxed, informal and almost countryside-like – despite being only a short drive from the bustle of Ljubljana.

There are restaurants you visit to see what is new, inventive or fashionable. And then there are places like Grad pod Šmarno goro, where the appeal lies in precisely the opposite. You come for a bowl of hot beef soup, a plate of crispy fried chicken, salad dressed the way Slovenian grandmothers have been making it for decades, and flancati buried beneath a cloud of powdered sugar. Nothing needs reinventing.
