Autumn in Slovenia is short but spectacular. Whether you’re chasing fall colors, local wine, or peaceful nature walks, here are three unforgettable places to experience Slovenia at its autumn best — and the best part? They’re all close enough to explore on foot.

The best starting point for this adventure is Kranjska Gora, a charming alpine town easily reachable by bus from Ljubljana. From here, you can walk to all three destinations — Lake Jasna, Zelenci spring and Rateče village — without needing a car.

Lake Jasna

Just outside the alpine village of Kranjska Gora, Lake Jasna is a postcard come to life. Surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Julian Alps, this twin-lake gem glitters in shades of emerald and gold each autumn.

Take a walk along the wooden pier, enjoy a coffee by the water, and breathe in the crisp mountain air. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the first snow dusting the mountains — the perfect contrast to the fiery fall colors below.

TIP: Lake Jasna has been getting quite busy lately, so it’s best to visit early in the morning for a peaceful experience.

Zelenci Nature Reserve

A few kilometers from Kranjska Gora lies Zelenci Nature Reserve, one of Slovenia’s treasures. Known for its striking turquoise spring that never freezes, Zelenci is especially enchanting in autumn when the surrounding marshlands and larch trees turn golden.

Wooden boardwalks let you wander quietly through the reserve, spotting birds and soaking in the reflections of the Julian Alps. It’s a peaceful stop that photographers and nature lovers.

TIP: From Kranjska Gora it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to reach Zelenci spring, comfortable shoes are recommended.

Rateče Village

Rateče is a charming small alpine village in northwestern Slovenia, situated right near the borders with Italy and Austria. Surrounded by majestic peaks and lush forests, it makes it an ideal destination for scenic walks, hiking, and photography.

The village’s cozy atmosphere, traditional alpine architecture, and local restaurants make it also a perfect alpine base or even a retreat.

TIP: The village has three great restaurants. For a full experience, enjoy lunch at one of them or even spend the night, as accommodations are available. Don’t miss a visit to the nearby famous Planica while you’re there. It’s one of the largest ski flying hills in the world, where athletes can soar over 250 meters. It hosts major international competitions every year.
